FOLEY DOOR BELL PUSH

Over two years ago an original Edwardian door bell was purchased from an antiques shop. This was to be the one we would cast and today has become the Foley bell.

From the front, every detail is correct to the original. It includes a porcelain press (with crackle detail), the surround is cast in solid brass and mounted to an oak backplate. The diameter is 150mm or 6″ – a perfect size, enough to have presence while not being too big to fit by the door. On the back it has been adapted to connect to a modern bell chime. As far as we know there is nothing quite like it on the market.

This bell is called Foley after my late husband Martin, who started Priors with me nearly 20 years ago. Martin passed away some time ago from a disease called Scleroderma. We give £1 per transaction to this charity in his memory. He loved the bell and would be delighted that the product was named after him. Each time we sell one we will think of him.

Selecting A Door Knocker

If you are considering a new door knocker for your existing or new door, here are some selection tips.
Firstly think about the style and period of door. If you have an original door or one made in the style of an original, you need to think about what would suit for the period. Animal head knockers are a popular choice and these have been popular for hundreds of years. Many different types of animal head can be purchased and these castings give a grand look. One of the most popular would be the Lion's head. If you have an old planked style door you may want to consider something hand forged in iron such as a ring style door knocker. An Art Deco door will require an Art Deco style door knocker often in shiny nickel or chrome.

Think also about the size of your door knocker. This should be driven by the door size. We suggest making a scale paper cut out and you can stick this on the door to see if you are happy with it. If you have a panelled door, you need to consider the panel widths. Normally door knockers are positioned on the central panel fairly high up the door, so you need to make sure the backplate of the knocker fits the panel. If you have a thin panel the Doctor’s Knocker is a popular choice. For large oversized doors we do have some extra large door knockers.

The style of your other door furniture will also be a consideration. If you have quite plain door knobs and letter plate you may want a more smooth finish on the knocker, equally the detailed casting of an animal head can also look good.

The Choice of Finish is normally guided by your other items of door furniture. If you have not selected them, you need to think about the period of the door and also consider the colour. We have lots of Pinterest boards which show all sorts of finishes on many colours of door.

We help this helps you to make the right choice.

Please sponsor my fundraising efforts. I cycled 100 miles in the Prudential London ride in August and next year I will be doing the Bolton Ironman Triathlon. Priors have raised over £5000 for the Scleroderma Society as my husband and partner in Priors died from this disease. We give £1 per transaction to the charity. You can donate at:

Art Deco Door Furniture

Art Deco is a design style which became popular all over the world during the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. It affected all forms of design, from product design to architecture and the fine and decorative arts. The high point of Art Deco was the 1925 Paris Exhibition which attracted millions of visitors from around the world.

In terms of home interiors, mass production meant that everyone could share in Deco style. Shapes became angular, stepped and geometric, finishes were shiny, chrome, glass and mirrors, nature motifs such as shells sunrises and flowers were common.
Main entrance doors to up market properties often included glazed panels, highly decorative using the motifs and geometric designs of the times. Skylights and widows would be similar. Many internal doors in lesser homes had bakelite (an early plastic) door handles and knobs. These were generally brown and dull and are no longer made. Your only chance of buying them is via a reclaimed or antiques outlet. Take care though, as the spindles may not fit modern locks and latches.
Our English supplier found Art Deco moulds in their stores and now produces a wonderful range, true to the times. It includes everything you need for your doors including Art Deco door knobs and handles, letter plates, door knockers and more. Polished chrome and nickel are popular finishes and we also do unlacquered brass. Any of these finishes would be appropriate for Art Deco doors.
If you have an Art Deco house then do make sure the door furniture is in keeping with the shapes and finishes of the time. It’s in the detail!

Exciting Things to Add to Your Bucket List

Having a bucket list is something that a lot of people are able to claim but the number of people who actually aim to complete the tasks that have been noted down in this list is sadly significantly lower than the original number of owners. A bucket list is simply a list of things that an individual aims to do before they kick the proverbial bucket and thus can be seen as a means of adding a sense of meaning and completion in an individual’s life. The main mistake that is made by many individuals who bother to take the time to make a bucket list is the level of reality they apply to the creation of the list. Most bucket lists consist of items that in reality are really quite unachievable by the particular person in question and is usually made up of wishful thinking.
However, if one actually takes the time to sit down and think reasonably about the items that should go on such a list, one can find that the experience can be quite an exhilarating one. The main aim of a bucket list is to help an individual develop an actual visual of the things that they would like to accomplish before they have outstayed their welcome on this earth. This is not to say that all individuals are busy jotting down things that they know will never happen, but this practice should be done with a bit of realistic conception when an individual is making it. Coming up with a bucket list full of items that one is well aware that they will not in all likelihood be able to accomplish like placing wood door knobs on a metal door, the concept is solid enough but there are better alternatives that would be more suitable to the situation.
One should take the time to sit down and actually think about the things that they would like to do before they die and then come up with a bucket list that can actually be accomplished if one puts their head to it. This is actually not a hard task to achieve and though it may be as fun as coming with items such as “talking to an alien” on an individual’s list, it gives one something that they can work one thus allowing them satisfaction of being able to tick off a good number if not all of the items that are on an individual’s list. Some of the fun things that an individual may choose to add to their list and are quite achievable if one puts their mind to it include exciting activities such as:
Sky Diving
This is an exhilarating feeling that cannot be compared to anything else. There are few things that get the adrenaline pumping going as fast than jumping out of an airplane.
Meet a Head of State
This is something that is not easy to do, but it is achievable nonetheless. It is also a story that one will be able to tell their kids when they are older and serve as a source of memorable reminiscing.
